We are pleased to announce that the Department of Economics has been awarded the Silver Athena Swan Award, following a rigorous review by the Athena Swan Award panel. This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion within our Department.
The Silver Award, valid until July 31, 2029, acknowledges the substantial progress we have made since our initial Bronze Award in 2018. It highlights our dedication to creating an inclusive environment where all can thrive.
Issues of equality, diversity, and inclusion are at the heart of what the Department does and what we stand for. We were very proud that the Department was one of the first Economics departments to achieve a Bronze Athena Swan Award in 2018 and are delighted that we are the first Economics Departments to be awarded the Silver Award.
Some of our key achievements include:
• Implementing policies and practices that address equality and diversity.
• Fostering an inclusive environment for staff and students.
• Enhancing support and development opportunities for underrepresented groups.
The Athena SWAN Charter is an initiative established by the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) designed to recognise and encourage good practice in gender equality in Higher Education. It was first started in 2005 to acknowledge progression in advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM). In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL). It was also extended to cover professional and support roles within higher education. More recently Advance HE has reviewed the principles of the Athena Swan charter and more information is available on their website.
