Sheilagh Ogilvie

I am an economic historian who analyzes the causes of economic growth in Europe between the Middle Ages and the present day. I focus on the role of institutions – the formal and informal constraints on individual decision-making – in shaping economic development. In recent years I have published books and articles on guilds, serfdom, communities, merchant organization, the family, gender, human capital investment, consumption, and state capacity.
