Women in Economics

Women in Economics is a dynamic group running termly events for all Department members who identify as female, and also non-binary people who are comfortable in a female-centred community. The group is welcoming and inclusive; bringing together past and present economists from the department to engage across research interests and career stages.

Recently the group has hosted networking receptions, talks from alumni, and launch events for new initiatives in the Department. The group is run by our active student body and supported by faculty and professional services staff.

Women in Economics also has a LinkedIn group called 'WECAN' (the Women in Economics Alumni Network). If you identify with the group above and have been or are currently a member of the Oxford Department of Economics, join the WECAN LinkedIn group to stay connected and hear about future events and networking opportunities.

Mentoring

Our student-led mentor schemes aims to foster links between female students on different courses and with female faculty members.

    • Over three years our DPhil-MPhil mentor scheme has successfully partnered DPhil students with first year or second MPhil students, depending on their specialism.
    • This year the department piloted a student-led mentor scheme for female MPhil and undergraduate students with around 34 students participating.
    • Student reps also organise termly events connect research students with female faculty staff and alumni from the department.

Athena Swan Silver Award

  • The Department is proud of our Athena Swan Silver Award, achieved in 2024, which recognises our efforts to promote gender equality and introduce organisational practices that create a better working environment for everyone.
